Poetry Analysis
After Years
- shows someone - maybe a friend, or maybe something more - walking away from him, and then in his heart he feels many feelings at once, and he feels that these incidents - a glacier falling into the sea, a tree falling, etc. - happen
- the biggest thing that in his heart, he wants to tell someone, to call to the person and go meet her
- a really deep poem, with not much to understand, but at the same too much to understand as well
- in other words, the metaphors are really sophisticated and relate to his feelings
- the glittering face of the glacier could be "her pretty face" and he sees it "sliding into the sea" meaning he can't get it back now
- the tree falling means that he feels heartbroken when he sees her
- even people, like the old woman, feel his sadness
- last but not least even the stars explode, meaning in his feelings that that's how he feels
- he feels a lot of things going on in him in this poem
A Birthday Poem
- point of view of a cow - tin bell, grazing in the grass
- this poem is about the birth and death of the sun in the form of a day
- in the morning the sun is born, red and orange, with the potential energy to shine bright yellow throughout the day, and in the end, the energy dies with the same sluggishness as it began with
- the cow "feasts" on every green moment, meaning the grass, and then when the day ends, he goes back into the shed, waiting for another great birthday
Flying at Night
- this poem is about apparently a bird flying at night, looking at the stars above, and the constellations below, meaning the many lights of peoples' houses
- main idea is that there looks like there are more lights than stars in the sky
- a galaxy dies "like a snowflake falling on water", meaning so quiet, that it is almost impossible to hear, but the ripple it creates does affect the surrounding, that is why the farmer felt the chill of the "distant death"
- the farmer then turns on his light, a small, tiny light, that against that explosion is minuscule
- the rest of the city, though, has a million lights, "tugging" meaning, trying to drown that minuscule light in the superiority of the whole city
